Selge, high on the southern slopes of the Taurus in Pisidia, claimed foundation by Spartan colonists. It grew into the most populous city of the region, able to field 20,000 men, and prospered from oil, wine and fragrant storax resin. In 218 BC it attacked neighbouring Pednelissos and was besieged by forces of the Seleukid usurper Achaios, buying peace with a heavy indemnity. Its bronzes honoured Herakles and the thunderbolt of Zeus, and the city flourished into Roman times.
