Thrakien, Chersonesos Hemidrachm 386-338 BC (Ohne mindestpreis)

Thrace, Chersonesos. 386-338 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 11.44 mm, 2.21 g). Obv: Forepart of a lion to right, head turned back to left. Rev: Quadripartite incuse square with two raised and two sunken squares; varying symbols and monograms in sunken squares. Reference: McClean 4082-4083; SNG Copenhagen 824-826. The Thracian Chersonesos, the modern Gallipoli peninsula, held great strategic importance in antiquity because it controlled the European side of the Hellespont, the narrow sea route linking the Aegean with the Black Sea. Its Greek cities prospered from trade and agriculture, while control of the peninsula was contested by Athens, Persia and later Macedon. Its position made it a vital military and commercial gateway between Europe and Asia.
