A charming Japanese hand-painted hanging scroll (Kakejiku) by an artist signing as Toshihiko (敏彦), titled “Samuzora” (寒空), meaning “Cold Sky.” Executed by hand in color on silk (Kenpon Chakushoku), the painting depicts sparrows (Suzume) and pussy willow branches (Nekoyanagi), capturing the quiet beauty of nature during the colder season. The delicate pussy willow branches, with their soft emerging buds, suggest the transition from winter to early spring, while the sparrows bring warmth and life to the composition. The contrast between the small birds and the restrained seasonal landscape creates a peaceful and poetic atmosphere. In Japanese art, sparrows are familiar subjects associated with everyday life, vitality, and the changing seasons. Pussy willow is admired for its early buds and its association with the approaching arrival of spring. The work bears the artist's signature and seal and is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), adding to its collectible appeal. The scroll is traditionally mounted with wooden roller ends, making it suitable for display in a tokonoma, tea room, study, or private collection. This piece would appeal to collectors of Japanese Nihonga, Kachō-ga, seasonal bird-and-flower painting, and traditional hanging scrolls. As a pre-owned work, it may show stains, foxing, fading, creases, discoloration, minor tears, repairs, or mounting wear.
