Item Description This is a small bronze incense burner crafted in the form of a mythical creature known as a "shishi (komainu)," widely associated with incense ceremony implements. The lid is fashioned in the shape of the shishi's head, featuring a swirling mane and bared fangs, with the open mouth serving as a smoke outlet. The body is supported by four powerful claw-shaped feet and terminates in a curling tail; the surface of the body is decorated with arabesque and flame motifs characteristic of traditional East Asian metalwork. Compact enough to fit in the palm of the hand, it is well suited for display on a shelf, in a tokonoma alcove, or on a study desk. It may be used as a functional incense burner or displayed purely as an ornamental piece alongside other metalwork collections. The bronze surface shows a natural patina that has developed over time, with mingling tones of reddish-brown and green that lend it a pleasingly aged character. Dimensions Height: 6 cm Width: 5.5 cm Depth: 4.5 cm Weight 144 g Condition The piece displays a rich patina acquired over the years. There are minor surface scratches and small abrasions in places, but no significant damage. The lid fits securely onto the body. Please refer to the photographs provided for further details regarding the surface condition.
