Hochbeinige Angebotsstände 高坏 (takatsuki) - Lackiertes Holz - Japan - Meiji Periode (1868-1912)
A pair of elegant black lacquered high-footed offering stands 高坏 (takatsuki), finely decorated in maki-e with peafowl and flowering plants.
The circular trays each feature a refined composition of a pair of peafowl, with the male displaying his long, richly detailed tail while standing upon a rocky outcrop among flowering peonies 牡丹 (botan).
The scene is executed in various shades of gold, silver and black maki-e against a glossy black lacquer ground, surrounded by a continuous scrolling karakusa 唐草 border. The raised rims are finished in gold.
Each tray is supported by a baluster-shaped stem rising from a domed circular foot. The bases are decorated in gold maki-e with trailing vines of morning glory 朝顔 (asagao).
Takatsuki are traditional elevated stands used for presenting food and offerings. Lacquered examples were used in both Buddhist and Shinto contexts for offerings such as fruit, sweets and rice cakes, while they could also be used on ceremonial and festive occasions.
Period: Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912).
