The Myth of the American Dream: An outstanding Social Documentary. Joakim Eskildsen spent years travelling through New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Georgia — not as a journalist, but as a witness. The result is a portrait of communities living at the edges of the American Dream: families, workers, and lives that, as his publisher Steidl writes, “usually remain invisible in a society to which the myth of the American Dream still remains strong.” This is photography as sustained attention — the kind that takes time, trust, and a willingness to sit with discomfort. Eskildsen works in a tradition that runs from Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans through Robert Frank and Eugene Richards to Alec Soth: photographers who treat their subjects not as subjects, but as witnesses. American Realities belongs on the shelf alongside the great social documentary photobooks. Published by Steidl. Hardcover, 120 pages, 20.5 x 24 cm. English. ISBN 978-3869307343.
