Nagamitsu was one of the most celebrated swordsmiths of the late Kamakura period and a leading figure of the Osafune school of Bizen Province (present-day Okayama Prefecture). He is traditionally regarded as the son of Mitsutada, founder of the Osafune tradition. Nagamitsu produced a wide variety of works ranging from magnificent flamboyant temper patterns to refined straight temper lines, and is considered one of the most important smiths of the old sword period. Among his most famous works is the National Treasure “Daihannya Nagamitsu.” Tsuba is modern and cast. The sword is fitted with a silver-covered copper habaki. The upper section has a plain mirror-like silver finish, while the lower section is decorated with deeply carved irregular openwork patterns. The fuchi and kashira are decorated with multiple vertical ridges. Sections of shakudō alloy are finished with nanako, a highly refined traditional technique consisting of countless tiny punched dots covering the surface. Fine brass inlay lines run along the grooves, creating a unified decorative design throughout the fittings. The menuki appear to depict pine motifs in brass inlay on copper. Pine trees traditionally symbolise longevity, endurance, and steadfastness in Japanese art and culture. The sword comes with a copy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate, as the original document will be returned to the authorities. According to the Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate issued by Shizuoka Prefecture No. 088345, the sword is registered as a katana with a blade length of 67.4 cm, curvature of 2.1 cm, and one mekugi-ana. The signature is recorded as “Nagamitsu” on the front and unsigned on the reverse. The certificate was issued on 29 July, Reiwa 7 (2025). The blade is in fair to good condition for its age, showing scattered minor rust, forging openings, surface scratches, a very small edge nick, and impact marks along the spine. The fittings show age-related patina and wear. The tsuba had some looseness, so two additional thin seppa (spacers) were added after the photographs were taken; these added seppa are therefore not shown in the photos. Despite this adjustment, the tsuba still moves slightly. The black lacquered scabbard is in fair to reasonable condition with scratches, dents, cracks, lacquer losses, structural splitting, and tape reinforcement. The display stand is not included. Please refer to the photos for details. ※Important Note: Due to size regulations, this item cannot be shipped to Spain, Germany, Denmark, and United Arab Emirates. We ask residents there to please refrain from bidding. The display stand is not included with this lot. Overall length of the blade (including the tang): approx. 84 cm Overall length including scabbard: approx. 101.5 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・In absence of modern certification, the signature and datation remains subject to authentication by modern standard. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos. However, due to differences in monitors and device displays, as well as photographic conditions, slight color variations between the photos and the actual product may occur. We ask for your understanding in advance. Thank you for your interest, and happy bidding!"
