Antikes Griechenland Hellenistischer Satyrkopf aus weißem Marmor - 12 cm

This marble head, attributed to the High Roman Imperial period (1st - 2nd century AD), represents a young satyr, a frequent figure in Greco-Roman mythology, associated with the god Dionysus (Bacchus in the Roman world). The sculpture presents characteristic features of these mythical creatures: a lively and ambiguous expression, parted lips and a curly and abundant mane that conveys dynamism and a carefree air. The piece, sculpted in marble, exhibits a remarkable treatment in the texture of the hair, with curls carved with great depth and fluidity, which reinforces its wild and playful appearance. Although the work has lost part of its original polychromie, its modelling and state of conservation allow us to appreciate the sculptor's mastery. The slight asymmetry in the facial expression and the inclination of the head suggest movement, in line with the Dionysian iconography that used to represent these beings in dynamic and festive attitudes. In the context of Roman art, this type of decorative head was used both in free-standing sculptures and in reliefs, serving as part of larger compositions in villas, gardens or spaces related to the Dionysian cult. The Greek influence is evident in the stylisation of the face and the carving technique, reflecting the Roman admiration for Hellenistic sculpture. Similar satyr heads have been found in Roman contexts, such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, where they used to decorate fountains and gardens. Notable examples include the dancing satyr in the Capitoline Museums or certain fragments found in Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli. Acquired from a Spanish private collection, J.M.F.M in the 70's. -The piece includes an authenticity certificate. The Seller can prove that the lot was obtained legally. Important information.
