PENTTI SARPANEVA - Armleuchter (3) - Bronze - Brutalistisch, Raumfahrtzeitalter

On offer is a set of three, luminous bronze candlesticks designed by Finnish artist Pentti Sarpaneva for Turun Hopea Oy (Finland) in the 1970s. Called ‘Pitsi’ or ‘Lace’ candlesticks, the design is ‘Brutalist / Space Age’, and features laced, filagreed bronze on the stem and the sconce of the two larger pieces, and on the sconce of the smaller one. The Makers mark (P. Sarpaneva) is incised on the base. The two larger candleholders are 16 cm high, with a diameter of 9 cm; and the smaller candlestick is 10 cm high and has a diameter of 7 cm. The three pieces, from 1972, are in very fine vintage condition with some normal, minor signs of wear and age. They are a stunning, iconic example of Scandinavian / Nordic design excellence. DIMENSIONS: The larger candleholders are 16 cm high and 9 cm wide; and the smaller one measures 10 cm high and 7 cm wide. CONDITION: The three pieces are in very fine vintage condition with some normal, minor signs of wear and age. There are no dents or deep scratches. The bronze has a lovely patina and the filagreed lace sections are whole and in tact. Note that one of the undersides is not bronze. SHIPPING: The candleholders will be wrapped, packaged and boxed with utmost care, and shipped with a tracking number. ARTIST: Pentti Sarpaneva trained as a graphic artist, studying at the School of Fine Art and the School of Industrial Art in Helsinki, Finland. During the 1960s, he turned to designing modernist jewellery and metalwork, working initially with the company Kalevala Koru and later with Turun Hopea Oy. While some of his jewellery designs were in silver or gold, his favoured metal was bronze, which he shaped into bold, sculptural designs, and featured open, textured elements. His work was often described as ‘Brutalist’ or ‘Space Age’. Pentti Sarpaneva's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and is featured in many permanent collections, including at the British Museum. He has won numerous prestigious international awards and prizes for his modernist designs that combined traditional Finnish craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Pentti was the brother of the renowned glass artist Timo Sarpaneva.
