Römisches Reich Bronze Sehr seltener Eisenring-Schlüssel (Clavis Anulata) (Ohne Mindestpreis)
Ring keys like this are among the most distinctive Roman domestic objects. They combined utility and personal symbolism—keys were closely associated with domestic security, marriage, and social status (for example, Roman brides were sometimes given keys to symbolize their new household authority).
A small iron key featuring a circular loop handle for wearing on the finger or attaching to a belt chain, with a barrel-shaped shaft and a cross-shaped bit at the end. The key measures approximately 12 cm in length, which fits the standard size for personal or casket keys used in domestic and private contexts.
This type of key, known as a ring key or clavis anulata, served to operate small locks, typically for chests, boxes, or jewelry caskets. The loop handle could also function as a finger ring, allowing the owner—often a woman or household manager—to carry it securely.
Keys of this type symbolized authority, guardianship, or household control, and are frequently found in both Roman and early Byzantine sites.
Material: Iron
Date: 2nd–5th century CE
Length: 12 cm
Condition: Complete with surface corrosion and stable reddish-brown patina
