Bactrian Bronze Kohl Jar with Applicator
Circa 2nd-1st millennium BC
This lovely bronze kohl jar shows a globular body set on three short feet, a tall chimney neck with everted rim, and a raised mid-band encircling the vessel; it comes with a matching bronze dip-stick applicator.
Kohl is a black, powdered cosmetic used around the eyes. In antiquity, it was made from substances such as galena (lead sulfide), antimony, or soot, mixed with oil or fat. People across the ancient Near East, Egypt, and Central Asia kept kohl in small jars like this and applied it with a slender rod to darken eyelids and lashes. Beyond beauty, kohl was thought to reduce glare, protect the eyes, and offer ritual protection.
Dimensions: 8cm x 5cm x 5cm
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
