Daum - Vase - Glas - Iris Vase - H. 44 cm

Daum Nancy – Vase with Iris Motif, Acid-Etched and Cameo Glass, with Inclusions This work, the "Vase with Iris Motif," is a masterpiece from the Golden Age of Art Nouveau, created by the Daum Frères (Daum Frères), a leading workshop of the French Nancy School. Its imposing size, with a soft yellow background and layers of translucent green, exudes the tranquil poetry of nature. The blooming iris heralds the arrival of spring and the breath of life. Their pale milky white petals, which take on a subtle pink or blue hue depending on the angle of the light, reveal a fleeting beauty, as if floating in the morning mist. This vase was created using Daum's unique techniques, **Inclusion Polychrome** and **Lamel Gravure**. Ishoku-yokashikomi is an advanced technique in which different colored glass pieces are layered in a molten state to create a natural color gradation within. This achieves a flowing color transition from the yellow of the background to the deep green of the base. Meanwhile, lamelle engraving is a technique in which the glass surface is gradually corroded with acid, carving out a delicate relief pattern. This technique makes each petal and vein of the iris stand out with astonishing three-dimensionality. The soft, matte surface reflects light, giving the impression of the flowers gently breathing. Along with Émile Gallé, the Daum brothers were leading figures in the École de Nancy art movement from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The movement's central philosophy was a "return to nature." Daum's works capture motifs such as forests, flowers, insects, and water in glass with a painterly and poetic sensibility. For them, glass was not simply a material, but a medium for sculpting light itself. The iris depicted in this work is also a flower symbolizing purity, rebirth, and hope, and is a fitting subject for the Dome, which celebrates the cycle of life and the mysteries of nature.
