It is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then is painted into the cloisons (compartments) of the design. The piece is fired in a kiln, allowing the enamel to melt and harden into a smooth, glossy surface. The name "cloisonné" comes from the French word "cloison," meaning "partition" or "compartment," referring to the cells created by the wire.
