Ancient Chinese, Han Dynasty Polychrome Pottery Bird with Bronze Legs Circa 2nd-1st century BC This lovely pottery bird is modelled with a rounded body, arched back, and elongated tail, supported on cast bronze legs with detailed claws and webbed toes. The surface preserves traces of red pigment on the head and dots on wings. The bird is shown with its head lowered, beak pointed forward, and wings folded closely against the body. This pottery bird serves as a distinctive example of mingqi, a diverse array of objects, including representations of everyday life, animals, and other items placed in tombs to accompany the deceased in the afterlife.
