Twergi, introduced in 1989, was a collection of wooden objects designed by Alessi's favourite designers (Branzi, Giovannoni, Graves, Venturi, etc.) and Sottsass and his young collaborators from 'Memphis'. In 1998, Twergi ceased to exist as a separate brand and more commercial products were added to the Alessi catalogue.
Alessandro Mendini
Alessandro was born in Milan in 1931. He has edited Casabella & Modo. He was awarded the prize Compasso d'Oro. He reinvented the Alessi image. He worked for companies like Philips, Swarovski & Swatch.
He met Alberto Alessi in 1977 and worked with Alessi as creative director for four decades. Mendini gave a face, arms and a powder-blue dress to the bestselling Alessi bottle opener that he named after a friend. Later, he created a self-portrait in the form of the Alessandro M corkscrew. At the other end of the scale he was the architect – though orchestrator is a better description – of the monumental Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, which opened in 1994.
