Platte - Porzellan - Five Cantonese Roosters - China - 1900er

Cantonese Famille Rose “Garden Roosters” Plate, c. 1900 — Famille Rose Export Ware A beautifully hand-painted Cantonese export plate from around 1900, decorated in vibrant famille rose enamels. The central scene presents five roosters in a lush garden setting, traditionally portrayed in the region as red junglefowl, symbolising vitality and natural harmony in southern Chinese art. The composition is rich and meticulously detailed, featuring bok choy (Chinese cabbage), delicately winged butterflies, cherry trees in full blossom, graceful pair of magpies, and softly painted flowering branches. The broad cavetto is ornamented with four medallions enclosing birds and floral motifs, alternating with finely executed geometric yellow-hatched enamel work, a distinctive Cantonese decorative hallmark. This is an excellent early example of this style of decoration, which became increasingly simplified throughout the 20th century due to the widespread adoption of transfer-printing techniques. The base is stamped “Made in China”, a mark mandated for porcelain exports in the final years of the Guangxu into the early Republic period, particularly for trade to foreign markets such as the United States, where these marks were a regulatory requirement for imported goods. The base shows minor enamel smears, a result of pigments accidentally spilling during the hand-painting process, an authentic trace of workshop production. Dimensions: W 25 × H 5.5 cm Condition: Excellent and original, with no damage or restoration; only minimal signs of age consistent with period export enamels. Checked with strong UV light for defects. Shipping method: The item is securely packed and shipped with insurance without stand or miniature vase.
