Les populations y habitant n'en utilisaient ni pour rehausser l'éclat de leurs fêtes, ni pour symboliser les esprits et ancêtres au cours des cérémonies initiatiques et cultuelles.

Toutefois, certains groupes des Teke (Tsaye et Assi-Nséké), occupant une région située dans le triangle Franceville (Gabon), Mossendjo et Sibiti (République du Congo) fabriquèrent des masques traditionnels de danse pour une société secrète appelée Kidumu.

Il s'agit d'une institution politico-religieuse dont les personnages principaux sont : le mfumu-a-ntsié, le ngan-ntsié et le danseur, porteur du masque, virtuose de la chorégraphie acrobatique individuelle.

Kidumu patronne les grands événements de la vie de la société : circoncision, mariage des personnages influents, décès des chefs, alliances, jugements,...

Le danseur qui se produit seul à l'issue des cérémonies est accompagné d'un orchestre où se dénombrent joueurs de corne d'antilope, batteurs de tambour, souffleurs de trompe et chanteurs.
