Quando incontri un prodotto originale e il suo creatore, come avviene con un artista, nasce spontaneo il desiderio di andare alla ricerca delle motivazioni, delle origini di un'idea, di chi l'ha realizzata. [...] Assecondando i suoi desideri, abbiamo voluto esplorare in queste pagine ciò che il nome di Mila Schön ha significato e significa ancora oggi. Un tratto pulito, costruito su un'immagine femminile consapevole della propria individualità, che non si nasconde sotto strati di velo o chiffon, ma si rivela attraverso la nitidezza del taglio di un abito semplice." Nata nel 1919 in Dalmazia, Mila Schön arriva alla moda per gusto e classe innati, ma soprattutto con grande determinazione. Comincia a disegnare abiti per le sue amiche, le ricche signore della borghesia milanese; nel 1958 il primo piccolo atelier e sette anni più tardi, nel 1965, il debutto sulle prestigiose passerelle fiorentine del pret-à-porter di Palazzo Pitti, nella leggendaria Sala Bianca. Nel 1966 conquista l'America, dove le viene conferito il Neimann Marcus Award, l'Oscar della moda per il colore, ed è la prima stilista italiana a sbarcare in Giappone. Diversamente dalla moda francese, caratterizzata dalle forme a corolla di Dior o dalle costruzioni volumetriche di Balenciaga, lo stile di Mila Schön sarà dettato da linee sobrie e nitide. Studia materiali nuovi che diventeranno il suo trademark: il double face che prevede l'accoppiamento di due tessuti. Mila Schön ha vestito personaggi del jet set internazionale come Jacqueline Kennedy e Marella Agnelli. Un tema che ha sempre caratterizzato le sue creazioni - e che ritroviamo nelle splendide foto del volume, in gran parte inedite e provenienti dagli archivi Schön e dalla collezione privata della stilista - è il rapporto fra ricerca artistica e progettazione: le onde, i cerchi concentrici e colorati, gli intarsi si ispirano alle opere di artisti moderni quali Mondrian, Calder, Klimt e Pollock.
