Samy Briss est un peintre, graveur et sculpteur né en 1930 à Jassi, en Roumanie. Après avoir étudié à l’académie des Beaux-Arts de Bucarest, l’artiste voyage et s’initie au dadaïsme. C’est à ce moment qu’il commence à exposer son travail, notamment à Paris, où il s’installe définitivement en 1974. 

Son travail, réalisé en grande partie en petit format depuis les années 1960, est construit à partir d’un jeu harmonieux de formes stylisées, figuratives, rondes, et aux contours fluides. Le fond doré investit les couleurs d’une lueur profonde et pleine, renforçant le caractère évocateur des représentations. Les personnages se détachent des dorures, sans reliefs, sans perspectives, comme des poupées d’enfant. L’œuvre de Sami Briss révèle un monde introspectif, rêveur, intemporel qui semble largement inspiré par ses souvenirs d’enfance, le folklore roumain et la peinture d’icônes.

Les oeuvres poétiques et oniriques de Samy Briss ont été exposées dans diverses galeries, en Europe, aux Etats-Unis et en Asie, mais aussi dans le cadre d’expositions au Jewish Museum of Art de New-York, au Palm Springs Art Museum ou encore au Musée National d’art de Bucarest.
