Mel Ramos gehört zur ersten Generation der Pop Art Künstler in den USA. 1935 in Sacramento (Kalifornien) geboren, studierte er in den 50er Jahren Kunst und war Schüler von Wayne Thiebaud, der mit seiner gegenständlichen Malerei und seinem Malstil einen großen Einfluss auf Ramos ausübte. Die Inspiration für seine frühen Bilder nahm Mel Ramos zunächst aus Comic-Heften. Etwas später kam die surreale Kombination von Frauen in Verbindung mit überdimensionierten Markenartikeln hinzu. Kunsthistorische Zitate spielen ebenfalls eine große Rolle in seinem Werk. Mel Ramos starb am 14. Oktober 2018 im Alter von 83 Jahren in Oakland an Herzversagen.
