"Black Wound" Badge With Miniature 
History of the institution:
The badge was instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II on March 3, 1918.

The German Wound Badge of World War I, or "Verwundetenabzeichen", was instituted on 3 March 1918 by Kaiser Wilhelm II to award military personnel for wounds received during the war of 1914–1918. The badge had three classes: 3rd (black) for 1–2 wounds, 2nd (silver) for 3–4 wounds or one serious wound, and 1st (gold) for 5 or more wounds or one very serious wound (such as blindness). The badge itself was an M16 steel helmet (Stahlhelm) with crossed swords in the background, framed by a laurel wreath. 
Classes and award criteria: 
3rd class (black): For 1–2 light wounds. 
2nd class (silver): For 3–4 light wounds or one moderate wound, or such mutilations as the loss of an arm, leg, or hearing. 
1st degree (gold): For 5 or more light wounds, or one serious wound, such as complete loss of vision or serious damage to the musculoskeletal system.
