Römische Bronzeapplikation – Medusa (Gorgoneion)
Römische dekorative Bronzeapplikation mit der Darstellung des Kopfes der Medusa, einer Figur aus der griechischen und römischen Mythologie, deren Bild eine schützende, apotropäische Funktion hatte. Medusa ist frontal dargestellt, mit stilisiertem, welligem Haar, das in der künstlerischen Darstellung auch als Schlangen interpretiert werden kann. Solche Motive waren in der römischen Zeit sehr verbreitet und wurden als Verzierung an Möbeln, Truhen, Rüstungen oder Pferdegeschirr verwendet. Man glaubte, dass das Bild der Medusa seinen Besitzer schützt und das Böse abwehrt. Das Objekt ist aus Bronze gefertigt und stammt aus der römischen Zeit, etwa aus dem 1.–3. Jahrhundert n. Chr.
