Sometsuke Sansui Haōryū-zu Guinomi (Blue-and-White Sake Cup with Landscape and Dinosaur) – Mikihiro - Ceramic - Mikihiro Itō / 伊藤幹浩 (b.1972) - Japan - Heisei period (1989-present)

A small porcelain vessel alive with bold brushwork—a Dinosaur prowls among pine-covered peaks, its powerful form rendered in deep cobalt blue against luminous white. Description: This guinomi (sake cup) is a finely potted porcelain piece decorated in sometsuke (underglaze cobalt blue) technique. The interior of the bowl presents a dramatic composition featuring a powerful Dinosaur emerging from a landscape of pine trees and mountains. The Dinosaur is depicted with characteristic attributes a sinuous body covered in scales, fierce clawed limbs, and a head with bared teeth and an intense expression. The creature's form winds through stylized pine branches, their needles rendered in fine, rhythmic strokes. Distant mountains appear in wash-like tones near the rim. The exterior continues the pine motif, with clusters of pine needles sweeping across the white porcelain surface in bold, confident brushwork. The decoration wraps dynamically around the vessel, creating visual interest from every angle. The blue pigment varies in intensity from pale wash to deep saturated cobalt, demonstrating skilled control of the medium. The bowl has a wide, shallow form with gently curving walls that taper to a small raised foot ring. The foot bears a dark blue painted signature mark. The underside of the bowl shows the continuation of the pine needle decoration. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) inscribed "染付山水覇王竜図 ぐい呑" (Sometsuke Sansui Haōryū-zu Guinomi) with the artist's signature "幹浩作" (Made by Mikihiro) and red seal, an orange cloth wrapper with printed seal design, and a printed biographical leaflet about the artist. Cultural & Art Context: Sometsuke, or underglaze blue, is a traditional Japanese porcelain decoration technique where cobalt oxide is painted onto the surface before glazing and firing. This method produces vivid blue designs beneath a clear glaze, resulting in a smooth, durable finish. Popular since the 17th century, sometsuke is highly valued for its elegance, precision, and timeless aesthetic in both functional ware and collectible art pieces. Collector Appeal: Contemporary Seto-ware artists working in the sometsuke tradition offer collectors an opportunity to acquire hand-painted porcelain that continues centuries of ceramic heritage. This piece, complete with tomobako and artist documentation, presents an accessible example of skilled brushwork on porcelain suitable for both display and functional use. Artist Profile: Mikihiro Itō (伊藤幹浩) is a ceramic artist based in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He established his kiln in Seto in 1999. From 2001 to 2019, he held solo exhibitions primarily in the Nagoya area and participated in group exhibitions.
