Provenance & Significance
Otto Henne am Rhyn (1828–1914) was a Swiss writer, historian, editor, and long-serving state archivist of St. Gallen. After marrying Elisabeth am Rhyn, a member of a prominent Lucerne family, he added her name to his own. He was also an active Freemason and a notable intellectual figure of his time.
The association inscription and the handwritten business card by his wife give this copy strong historical and bibliophilic significance.
Literary Context
Kinkel’s Tanagra is a classic 19th-century poetic idyll inspired by ancient Greece and the celebrated Tanagra figurines, reflecting the era’s romantic fascination with classical antiquity. The work later gained international popularity through illustrated English editions, becoming a prized gift book of the late 19th century.
