Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Francesco Gioli, Il Bacio, oil on pressed cardboard, 15 × 12.2 cm, 1900–1910, Italy, original edition, sold with a new frame.
Description from the seller
Francesco Gioli (San Frediano, 1846 – Florence, 1922), oil on pressed cardboard measuring 15 x 12.2 cm, with an 1800s frame approximately 30 x 25.8 cm.
Double painting by the master of the macchiaioli, Francesco Gioli, one of the protagonists of the macchiaioli painting alongside Giovanni Fattori and Telemaco Signorini.
The work is painted on both front and back: on the front, it depicts a garden scene with a balustrade and statues, and two silhouettes of a lady and a gentleman walking embraced. On the other side, there is a painting of a dinner inspired by The Kiss by Francesco Hayez.
This is a curious work in which the macchiaiola technique is applied to the creation of two scenes with a first-to-nineteenth-century aesthetic.
On the front is signed 'FGioli' while the back is signed only with the monogram 'FG'.
The front of the painting is in excellent condition, and the painted scene on the back is also in excellent condition. However, it should be noted that the peripheral area of the cardboard, in unpainted zones, shows surface abrasions likely caused by tearing of an old tape that was holding the painting in the frame.
Sold with a new frame.
