This lithograph titled “Piano” is part of Pablo Picasso’s reinterpretation series inspired by Diego Velázquez’s masterpiece “Las Meninas” (1656), one of the most influential works in the history of Western art.

While Velázquez’s original composition does not include a piano, Picasso reimagined the scene through his own inventive lens. Drawing inspiration from the two dwarfs and the dog depicted on the right side of the original painting, Picasso introduced a completely new motif: a young boy playing the piano. This imaginative transformation exemplifies Picasso’s lifelong dialogue with art history and his ability to create new visual narratives from canonical works.

The lithograph was produced at the renowned Mourlot Studio in France, a workshop closely associated with Picasso’s graphic works. The edition bears the Mourlot embossed stamp on the lower left, and a pencil signature by master printer Henri Deschamps on the lower right, attesting to its authenticity and quality.

This work belongs to a limited edition of 500 impressions and is numbered 299/500. Created in 1992, it represents a posthumous edition printed under strict supervision, following established studio practices and market conventions for Picasso lithographs.
