Handmade batik textile artwork from Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, signed 'Wiston Batik Hikkaduwa', silk fabric, 93 × 93 cm, circa 1960–1970, framed in a black wooden frame with a gold trim.
Description from the seller
An extraordinary handmade batik textile artwork from the renowned region of Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, signed 'Wiston Batik Hikkaduwa'. This high-quality collectible measures 93 × 93 cm and features a complex, circular mandala composition with 12 scenes depicting the life cycles of the Buddha and his teachings.
The work was produced using the traditional wax-reserve technique (Batik Tulis). Several layers of hand-applied wax and dye give the textile its intense turquoise, red, yellow, and gold tones, as well as the characteristic natural crackle effect that only occurs in truly handmade batik.
The circular depiction is divided into radiating segments that depict 12 scenes of the Wheel of Life, including Buddhist religious narratives with meditatively posed figures surrounded by halos. In the center is a central devotional portrayal. The artwork hails from the golden era of Sri Lankan batik production (1970s–1990s), when Hikkaduwa was regarded as an important center of this art form.
The textile is professionally framed in a black wooden frame with a gold decorative border, which highlights the textile texture and the craftsmanship details especially well. The colors are vivid and well preserved, the fabric is fully intact and made of high-quality silk, which enhances the vibrant colors even more.
The production of this labor-intensive piece required approximately 2–4 weeks, with 6–10 wax and dye applications, carried out by an experienced craftsman. The visible natural crack lines confirm its authenticity as a genuine handcrafted batik textile and not a reproduction or print.
An important example of Sri Lankan textile art that combines Indonesian batik techniques with Buddhist cultural heritage – ideal for collectors of Asian art, textile art, or Buddhist iconography.
