This original first edition, dated : Utrecht, 1657, represents an extremely important comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699), famous Dutch Calvinist theologian and Hebraist - one of the most prominent Bible experts of his time. He wrote several works on Hebrew philology. In this first work of 1657 " Philologus Hebraeus..." he treats subjects about Hebrew philology, Judaism and its commandments, A special chapter is dedicated to Kabbalah and Kabbalists. UNUSUAL printed vellum binding (rather rubbed and with deep scratches) with text printed on front and back covers in red and black and hand-coloured initials in blue. Binding with wear and some loss on spine (mainly tails). Old name on 2nd fly-leaf. Title with old name (Jacob de Losea?) and handwritten date 1659. Unobtrusive small old library stamp (one line in reddish colour) on bottom of title-page. Some old scribbling on the title ornament. Many pages with old underlining and comments, some in Hebrew letters. A very intriguing binding of this rare first edition. Please inspect the photos for a good impression of the condition.
