I was driving along a road between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India. It was sunny and stiflingly hot, about 110°F (43°C), when the sky suddenly darkened and a pre-monsoon dust storm began. As the storm grew stronger and more dramatic, the air became thick with dust. Through the haze, I could see these women huddled together on the sides of the road to protect themselves from the fierce wind. This region had been suffering from drought for more than a decade, and the women were chanting a prayer for rain. I got out of the car, ran across a field, and photographed them moments before the storm cleared. Then the sun came out immediately, as if nothing had ever happened.
