A Chinese famille rose and blue 'Figural' gilt octagonal deep (soup) plate depicting a scene from 'Romance of the Western Chamber'. China, Qing dynasty (大清), Qianlong period (1735-1796, 乾隆), mid 18th c. Not common model, difficult to find! Finely painted to the interior in bright famille rose enamels, details highlighted with gilding. Centered medallion with a figural scene from 'Romance of the Western Chamber' depicting protagonists Zhang Sheng, Cui Yin Yin and Hong Niang in a palace setting. Two persons on the terrace with pagoda-shaped roof, one figure with flower in hand standing next to the wooden fence, two Mandarin ducks next to him, on left an oversized flowering peony. All within double blue circle and band of spears. Border extensively decorated in underglaze blue with rococo-style wide band of wines, butterflies, scrolls and flowers, followed by a narrow band of gilt diaper-pattern on iron red ground and blue, red and gilded Ruyi heads. Exterior not decorated. to the interior with a garden scene depicting an oversized violet peony on the left; brown and gilded tree with flowers and fruits on the right; rocks in sepia in lower part. Border with three flower-sprays. Exterior not decorated, nice V-shaped foot-rim. Daylight pictures included. Provenance: private collection, Germany. Dimensions: diameter - 23 cm; height - 2 cm. Weight – 358 g. Conditions report: hairline from the edge and hairline to the base. Minimal wear to the painted decoration. Minor firing faults Tested with strong white light.
