The gourd form has long been regarded in Japan as a symbol of good fortune and protection, while the rabbit and moon motif evokes autumn moon-viewing and themes of harmony, gentleness, and prosperity. In Japanese folklore, the rabbit is believed to live on the moon, where it pounds rice to make mochi, symbolising abundance and good fortune. A rope is attached at the top, allowing the sign to be hung and displayed immediately. The wood surface shows natural ageing with scuffs, chips, minor scratches, and several small holes.
