HORST P. HORST, MAINBOCHER CORSET, PARIS, 1939 Photolithography, printed in 2006 Dry stamp lower right; embossed signature of the author: ''Horst'' Official press upper left: ''2006 Horst P. Horst / Art+Commerce'' Measurements: Photo format (height x width) 42x32 cm; Image format 28x19 cm The image that has become most closely associated with the “master of dramatic light” is Horst P. Horst’s iconic work, Mainbocher Corset from Paris in 1939. The timeless composition with its subtle elegance and astounding balance, not to mention the flattering light and dramatic shadows has become regarded by many as Horst’s best work. Mainbocher Corset was carefully composed with every detail planned; yet it is still the product of a special moment. Horst P. Horst was a pioneer of fashion and portrait photography and a key figure in the development of 20th-century photography as a whole. His sixty-year career was as varied as it was innovative, and during his working life he produced over 90 Vogue covers and hundreds, if not thousands, of magazine images. He is best known for his elegant, glamorous photographs of couture clothes from the 1930s, but he also pioneered the use of color photography and developed the fields of documentary travel photography and, later, celebrity lifestyle photography. A master of light and composition, Horst seamlessly combined fashion photography with art and high society in his images, capturing and reflecting the period in which he operated.
