Based on the development of the VT 41 series diesel railcars, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) ordered larger VT 42 series diesel railcars between 1935 and 1937. These vehicles had two engines of 210 hp and were designed for a top speed of 110 km/h. After the war, ÖBB operated the railcars under the new series designation 5042. Their area of operation was now the Westbahn, where they ran, among other services, as express trains. Due to the gradual electrification of the main lines, the locomotives of the 5042 series were moved to the secondary lines of Lower Austria in their final years of service.
