Max Thalmann (1890-1944). - Passion of Christ - EXPRESSIONISM - SUITE with 8 signed woodcuts, 1921

Max Thalmann (1890-1944). "Passion". Suite-portfolio with 8 original woodcuts handsigned in pencil by Max Thalmann. The cover of the original portfolio is also a woodcut. Numbered edition. Published by Wollbrück, Weimar, 1921. This edition was originally published by Wollbrück-Verlag, but due to very low sales, Diederichs-Verlag took over, adding approximately 100 copies. In total, 330 portfolios were published, of which 150 are numbered and contain all the prints signed by the artist. Our copy corresponds to the original Wollbrück edition. A facsimile edition of unknown print run also exists. Text printed by W. Drugulin, Leipzig. Includes edition text. All woodcuts protected with their original passe-partouts. Size: 59 x 41 cm. Bibliography: among others, Deutsche Literatur des Expressionismus, Peter Lang, 350. German Max Thalmann, the great expressionist relegated and forgotten, now being reclaimed, the one who abandoned his work as an artist to become a graphic designer and bookbinder... Trained in Weimar by Van De Velde, his artistic output is limited to three major works that position him in the history of expressionism as one of the greats: The Passion, The Cathedral, and America. "Passion" was published shortly after he briefly taught at the Bauhaus. All his works are striking for the woodcut clarity of a stylized and sequentially geometric representation. It is a gem. Extraordinary state of conservation. __________________________________ Professional packaging with all security measures.
