Erasmus of Rotterdam had always been interested in discovering ancient texts such as the apostolic letters, a unique opportunity to interpret and analyze them. Erasmus described his editorial intent with the Paraphrases of the New Testament as philological rather than theological: he brought out the Paraphrases progressively: Romans (1517), Corinthians (1519), the rest of the Epistles throughout 1520 and 1521, and the four Gospels and Acts from 1522 to 1524, Erasmus occasionally revised them until his death in 1536. Book printed by Sebastian Gryphius or Sébastien Gryphe (1493-1556) was the head of a printing house in Lyon and a humanist. The son of Michael Greyff (Greif, Gryff, Gryph), Sebastien Gryphius learned the new craft of printing, first in Germany and then in Venice.
