Rare scholarly edition of Marcus Annaeus Lucanus's De Bello Civili (Pharsalia), a 1658 reissue published by François Hackium, in full marbled calf binding, Latin text in two columns, 664 pages with title-page engraving and a folding map, interior in good condition.
Description from the seller
Rare scholarly edition of the epic poem by Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (39–65), nephew of Seneca, dedicated to the civil war between Caesar and Pompey.
This text, also known as Pharsalia, is distinguished by its rejection of divine interventions and its tragic view of history, where the brotherly struggle of the Romans is depicted with dramatic intensity and an implicit critique of absolute power.
This volume illustrates the humanist reception of Lucan, perceived as a Stoic and republican poet, whose work served to nourish the political and moral reflection of European scholars.
