Margaretha Ley was the co-founder and chief stylist of the German luxury fashion brand Escada. Together with her husband Wolfgang, she founded the company in 1978, becoming known for her bold, feminine designs and her distinctive use of bright colors and elaborate prints.
Career and Style
Fashion experience: before founding Escada, Margaretha Ley had a career as a model for Parisian designers like Jacques Fath and Christian Dior. She also had a solid tailoring background, gained by working for the court tailor of the Swedish royal court in Stockholm.
Design aesthetics: its style was characterized by sporty elegance, unusual color combinations, opulent embroidery, and knitwear with elaborate design. Its creations stood out for their use of imaginative prints and a touch of 'joie de vivre' (joy of living) that captured the outgoing spirit of the 1980s.
