This is a so-called “Bakul Siah” (auspicious basket), traditionally used by the Chinese Peranakan ethnic group for wedding ceremonies. Nowadays it has wider uses, which can be ceremonial, decorative or practical: weddings and various ceremonies; decoration at parties, restaurants, homes; storage of fruits, food etc. The basket is lightweight, made of woven bamboo, lacquered and colored traditionally in red and black, with overlaid golden decorations. It feels surprisingly solid for its weight. It has some traces of use as shown in photos, but it is overall in good condition. Dimensions: height 29 cm; diameter 30 cm at the widest.
