Description from the seller
Süßwasserfische von E. Walter – Schmeil’s Naturwissenschaftliche Atlanten – First Edition 1913 – Complete with All 50 Chromolithographic Plates in Excellent Condition
A rare and highly collectible first edition from 1913:
Part of the renowned series Schmeil’s Naturwissenschaftliche Atlanten, published by Quelle & Meyer, Leipzig.
This classic early 20th-century work provides a comprehensive overview of European freshwater fish species, illustrated with all 50 original chromolithographic colour plates – fully complete, present, and in excellent condition. The plates are vibrant, with sharp details and rich colours, showing no tears, foxing, stains, or significant discolouration. Each plate is accompanied by descriptive text leaves.
The original linen binding features the iconic Art Nouveau-style cover design with two orange fish amidst aquatic plants. The cover shows only minor age-appropriate wear (light soiling and rubbing to extremities), remaining firm and attractive for a book over 110 years old. Interior pages are clean, with no inscriptions or damage.
Dimensions: approx. 22 × 16 cm.
This is a scarce complete copy of the first edition, particularly desirable for collectors of antiquarian natural history books, scientific illustration, ichthyology, or early 20th-century chromolithography. A beautiful example from one of the most celebrated German educational atlas series of the period.
The only markings in the book are pencil writing on the title page, see the photo’s.
