Rare Napoleon III Gothic table gallery. Gilded bronze with inlaid champlevé decoration; on the base, three highly detailed cast sphinxes. The sphinx depicted here is a creature from Greek mythology, with the head of a woman and the body of a lioness, which posed riddles to travelers and strangled those who could not solve them. Three sphinxes guard the foot of this table gallery. Likely French, circa 1850-1880. Dimensions: 17 cm wide and 17 cm high.
