Description from the seller
Antique engraved loupe – anthropomorphic symbolic scene – patinated brass – 17th or 19th century
Rare antique magnifying glass in patinated brass or bronze, featuring a double-sided domed glass lens made from antique glass. Internal bubbles are visible within the glass, a typical detail of the blowing or molding techniques used before the industrial era.
The handle is triangular, wrapped with a twisted metal wire. The entire piece is handcrafted with remarkable finesse.
The frame is decorated with relief engravings depicting a symbolic and narrative scene that is uncommon.
A man appears to be playing the violin, with three characters in the background, one of whom is holding a wind instrument (trumpet or oboe).
On the other side, three women in long dresses from the medieval or Renaissance era, two of whom wear stylized animal heads (rabbit or mask).
Decorative floral motifs surround the scene.
The whole evokes a ritual, theatrical, or dreamlike scene, blending music, symbolism, and anthropomorphism. This type of representation, also finely engraved on a utilitarian object, is extremely rare.
⸻
Estimated dating:
Based on stylistic elements (figurative engraving, bullseye glass, metalwork), this magnifying glass could date from the 19th century, or even the 17th century according to certain clues (shape, patina, composition).
If the earliest dating is confirmed, it would be an exceptional object from a pre-industrial curiosity cabinet.
