Description from the seller
Pair of Art Deco bookends – TEDD, circa 1930
Elegant pair of art-metal bookends, resting on sober veined marble bases, depicting two stylized felines with a pronounced sculptural presence. Their clean, balanced lines perfectly express the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1930s, where the rigidity of form fuses with natural elegance.
The precise sculpting of the bodies and the masterful posture of the animals convey an impression of restrained strength and silent nobility. The patina of the metal subtly catches the light, highlighting the volumes and details without excess, while the marble provides stability and refinement to the overall composition.
This pair is signed TEDD, a French sculptor active around 1920–1930, whose work sits within the great tradition of French decorative arts of the interwar period. Far more than mere utilitarian objects, these bookends are genuine decorative elements, designed to elevate a library or a characterful interior.
Note: A slight ding on the side of the marble—see photos. Overall, the defects are overlooked for this beautiful sculpture.
