Apulejus / Max Klinger - Amor und Psyche - 1881

Max Klinger's large illustrated work 'Amor and Psyche (Apuleius)' with a printed dedication to the musician Johannes Brahms. The book contains 46 original etchings by Klinger, including 15 large-format full images. Slight compression in the lower front area, otherwise in very good condition, including the delicate light binding with gold applications. Gold edges all around.

Publications with originals by Klinger are rare. The graphic works on Amor and Psyche spanned several years, and this book is a major work by the young Max Klinger, completed just before his move to Berlin and his work on several important sculptures.

Klinger was already well known and recognized during his lifetime as a sculptor, painter, and graphic artist. His work is classified within the Symbolism movement, with page designs, especially the frames for Amor and Psyche, already hinting at the later Art Nouveau style.
