Description from the seller
Good condition.
Description:
This lacquer tray is a low, square platform form with gently raised sides and four short, integrated feet, giving it the quiet authority of a presentation stand rather than a purely utilitarian tray. The proportions are balanced and architectural, with softened corners and a subtly framed rim that contains the surface visually.
The ground is finished in warm red-brown urushi, showing fine, linear brush textures beneath the lacquer that reveal the hand-applied process. Along the inner edges, the color deepens into darker tones, creating a natural vignette that draws the eye inward. The surface has a soft sheen rather than a high gloss, allowing light to move gently across it.
Decorating the interior is a restrained composition of bamboo leaves and scattered blossoms, rendered sparingly in green, pale gray, and muted metallic accents. The bamboo is painted with thin, precise strokes, conveying freshness and resilience, while the small floral elements—some with subtle inlay-like highlights—appear to drift lightly across the surface, leaving generous areas of open space. This asymmetrical placement is deliberate, emphasizing rhythm, pause, and balance rather than fullness.
The tray’s low feet lift it just enough to give a sense of ceremony, making it suitable for displaying tea utensils, sweets, incense objects, or small works of art. The piece embodies a refined Japanese lacquer aesthetic: understated, seasonal, and quietly expressive, where surface texture, color depth, and negative space work together to create a calm yet dignified presence.
