Karel Dierickx, Fruit, a 1975 original pencil drawing (56 × 38 cm, framed 56 × 38 cm), hand-signed, in good condition, from Belgium, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
This is a pencil drawing by Karel Dierickx (Ghent, April 19, 1940 – Ghent, December 6, 2014), a Flemish painter and sculptor. His work moves between figuration and abstraction. Since the 1980s, Dierickx explicitly positioned himself against the then-dominant conceptual art.
During his education at the Rijksnormaalschool in Ghent, he was taught by Octave Landuyt, who had a significant influence on his early development. In 1984, Dierickx represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale. From 1995 onwards, he collaborated with the German Galerie Hachmeister, with whom he participated in prominent international art fairs, including those in Cologne, Basel, Paris, and Madrid.
In addition to his independent work, Dierickx illustrated bibliophile editions with poetry and prose by authors such as Roland Jooris, Stefan Hertmans, Leonard Nolens, Luuk Gruwez, Paul De Wispelaere, and Chris Yperman. From the 1970s until his retirement in 1999, he was a teacher at the Ghent Art Academy, where Wim Delvoye was among his students.
In 1995, Dierickx was a guest lecturer in painting at the Kanazawa College of Arts in Japan. That same year, he was appointed a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts. Although his work is unmistakably contemporary, it aligns with the Flemish painting tradition and focuses on classical genres such as landscape, still life, and portrait. A recurring theme in his oeuvre is ephemerality.
