Vivere nelle Alpi, by Pepi Merisio, 1st edition (1979), Italian hardback, 216 pages, signed on the title page, subjects photography, nature and sociology.
Description from the seller
An exceptionally signed copy on the title page by Pepi Merisio (1931–2021), unavailable online as a signed edition. 200 pages and 124 photographs in black and white and in color, in full page or, for some, in double-page spreads, with detailed captions in Italian at the head of each chapter, hardcover publisher’s binding illustrated on the cover.
This 1979 book illustrates a way of life that was already disappearing or on the verge of disappearing at the time of publication in the villages and countryside of the Alpine mountains, with images of daily life in the villages, of agricultural work which was then essentially manual, of family life and children's games, as well as religious processions. Pepi Merisio, an independent photographer, spent almost his entire life on the territory of Bergamo, which he explored in all its extents, traversing its plains and valleys as well as the high-mountain villages. He quickly earned significant international recognition, since in July 1966 the French-language issue of Camera, published in Lucerne, Switzerland, dedicated an important feature to him. Then, as director of Camera, Roméo Martinez introduced him into the collection Les Grands photographes (https://www.messinissalibri.com/prodotto/152963-i-grandi-fotografi-pepi-merisio), and Pepi Merisio signed with Gianni Berengo Gardin, who regarded him as a brother in photography, the volume on Latium for the Touring Club of Italy.
The illustrious photographer Ferdinando Scianna stated in 2021 at the death of Pepi Mérisio: "I met Pepi in 1967 when I had just arrived from Sicily, and he already had a great international prestige." "He had just won an international prize with the report on the death of Uncle Angelo, many gravitated around him and I had great admiration ... He had chosen his visual relationship to the world, the world he wanted to talk about and the way he wanted to do it... He had a political-cultural engagement more than direct... He was a great anthropologist of the peasant world. His archives are a cultural treasure of which we will continue to need in order to understand where we come from and where we are going, if we are going anywhere".
