Ceramic tea bowl from Japan dating to the 1950s–1960s, weighing 550 g with dimensions 14.5 cm in diameter and 6 cm in height, finished in a pale sandy glaze with an unglazed foot ring and minor signs of ageing in good condition; maker 光 and titled Soft and Elegant Bowl.
Description from the seller
Description:
This tea bowl has a light, spacious presence, with a form that opens gently outward and rests on a small, clearly defined foot. The proportions feel relaxed and natural, as if the maker allowed the clay to find its own balance on the wheel rather than forcing strict symmetry. It has a soft, almost understated elegance.
The surface is covered in a pale, sandy glaze that ranges from creamy beige to faint peach and blush tones. These soft patches of color seem to float across the bowl, as though created by the flame and ash during firing rather than painted on. The texture is slightly granular, giving it a tactile, earthy feeling when held. Inside, a faint circular line sits near the center, marking the turning of the clay — a quiet trace of the potter's hand.
The foot ring is simple and unglazed, revealing the raw clay beneath. You can see the tool marks and slight irregularities, which add to the sense that this is a handmade, honest object rather than something factory-produced. Around the base, the glaze thins and breaks slightly, letting the clay breathe through, while a few small iron spots scatter the surface.
When you turn it in the light, the glaze shows a soft shimmer rather than a hard shine. The bowl feels calm, open, and inviting — the kind of piece that doesn’t demand attention, but grows more beautiful the longer you look and the more you use it. It carries the quiet charm of everyday tea ware made with sincerity and restraint.
