Description from the seller
Classic Art Nouveau brass table lamp with opaline glass shades – circa 1900–1930
Description
Offered is an elegant, early 20th-century brass table lamp in the Art Nouveau style. The design features a gracefully curved armature and two opaline (milk glass) glass lampshades, which provide a soft and diffuse light distribution. This type of glass, known as opaline or opal glass, was popular between 1890 and 1935 to soften the then-new electric light.
Origin & Dating
The lamp was most likely produced in France or Belgium, where around 1900, high-quality interior lighting in brass with opaline glass was manufactured by specialized workshops. Based on style and material use, the production period can be estimated between 1900 and 1930.
Material & finish
• Frame and foot: brass (yellow-colored metal), handcrafted.
• Lamp covers: opaline glass, produced by molding or mouth-blown.
Electrically operated with an external cord, no oil or gas reservoir present.
Classic construction, typical of the transitional period to electric lighting.
state
The lamp is in a vintage, used but highly attractive decorative condition. The brass shows a natural patina appropriate to its age. The opaline glass shades are intact and free of cracks or fractures. The cord and fitting are present; operation cannot be guaranteed with absolute certainty due to the age, but the lamp is visually excellent as a decorative collectible or for restoration use.
Details
A stylish example of classical interior lighting from the period when electric lighting was still a luxury innovation. Through the combination of brass and opaline glass, the lamp aligns with the aesthetics of Art Nouveau, Belle Époque, and early 20th-century design movements.
