BIOGRAPHY : 

AGATHE TOMAN is a French, Austrian & Czech artist, painter, sculptor, photographer, and contemporary poetry writer, born in 1989. Agathe lives between Hossegor and Paris.

After studying at the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and spending several years as a designer within renowned French haute couture houses in Paris, Agathe felt a compelling need to focus exclusively on her artistic creation.

Now residing in the Landes for the past thirteen years, Agathe has established herself as an emerging figure in the contemporary art scene, admired both nationally and internationally.

Listed at Sotheby’s since 2021, her works have been auctioned on three occasions, attesting to her rapid ascent and recognition within prestigious art circles. Her remarkable contributions to various exhibitions, notably Art Paris, have garnered immense success, consolidating her presence in numerous private collections worldwide.

Her monochrome blues, with their rich pigments and fluid intensity, delve into the psyche, inviting an exploration of the boundaries between consciousness and the unknown, revealing glimpses of what lies beneath our perceived reality.

Her black monochromatic paintings are among her most powerful works. These textured canvases, rich in light and shadow, evoke intense emotional resonance, acting as mirrors of the viewer’s deepest interiority. They navigate between tension and attraction, confronting the unconscious and sparking profound self-reflection.

Her drawings, rendered with a Bic pen, possess a disconcerting force of attraction. Agathe’s photographs, with their kaleidoscopic abstractions, dazzle us with tranquil sensations, a reminiscence of a perfect weightlessness that existed at our beginning. Her hundreds of poems imbue her universe with a lyricism that characterizes her work. Her first collection, titled You Will Have to Learn to Smile Again, is set to be released in the winter of 2024.

Her sculptures, often described as abstract origami, embody a delicate yet powerful balance between spontaneity and meticulous craft. Their textured surfaces, enhanced by pigments and dynamic drips of blue, transform into dense, intricate forms imbued with both light and shadow.

Beyond her artistic practice, Agathe is deeply engaged in the study of psychoanalysis within the framework of transactional analysis, currently in her fourth year in Paris. This exploration enriches her conceptual process, allowing her to integrate profound psychological dimensions into her art, which becomes imbued with new layers of depth.

Agathe’s artistic approach is conceptual, philosophical, poetic, and scientific. This multidimensional perspective forms a tangible bridge between psychology, neuroscience, and art, grounding her work in a unique blend of intellectual and emotional depth.

Since 2024, Agathe has begun collaborating with Elly Chaskys, a neurosurgeon and researcher at the Brain Institute (ICM) in Paris, contributing her artistic insights to research on brain tumors.

Agathe does not separate her art from her social commitments. She focuses her work on crucial themes such as mental health, the environment, and education. These areas of reflection are not merely present in her art; they are an integral part of her artistic identity and personality.

Her work has been recognized and celebrated in several esteemed publications, including Forbes, L’Oeil, and Elle, highlighting her notable impact in the field of contemporary art.

"MY ARTISTIC VISION :

"I advocate for a multidimensional approach: conceptual, philosophical, poetic, and scientific. A tangible bridge between psychology, neuroscience, and art, where the structures of thought and human vibrations converge."

My work delves into the profound interconnections between psyche and body, weaving dialogues between mind and matter. I explore their modes of functioning within their environments—the networks they establish and the vibrations, both perceptible and ineffable, that emerge from these interactions. In this exploration, I consider not only the emotional and philosophical implications but also the scientific and psychoanalytic frameworks that shape our understanding of consciousness, neural networks, and the synaptic exchanges that govern human experience.
Themes such as identity, memory, human nature, and our alliances underpin my creations. My artworks often reflect emotional depth and palpable tension, inviting spectators into a space of profound introspection. They urge careful listening—a discovery of futures, identities, and feelings without preordained names or natures, asking viewers to look within their own consciousness. In this sense, the artwork becomes a conduit for understanding the networks of thoughts and emotions that exist in the mind and the body, as though we are exploring the very synaptic clefts where connection and separation occur.
These ideas are embedded in the very materiality of my works, resolutely abstract, monochrome, and shaded—where obscurity coexists with clarity. Blue sparkles as it merges with black, or shines alone. It is a representation of the inner workings of the mind, where synapses fire, creating pathways of light and shadow that mirror the complex web of neural and psychic connections that shape our reality and identity. My work reflects the delicate interplay of absence and presence, light and shadow—much like the synaptic firing in the brain that simultaneously exists in both states, creating new patterns of thought and feeling.
There is a meticulous familiarity between my hands and the pigments, charcoals, pencils, and paints I apply to paper or canvas. My technique is never replicated. I work to stabilize the movement of matter and the density of light, allowing memories to form in each particle. Lingering in these pieces is an irreverent suspense, an unexpected pull—what one might call l’appel du vide. It is the moment of neural uncertainty, a space between thoughts where the mind is both present and absent, a delicate dialogue between the conscious and the unconscious.
Each artwork becomes a self-portrait, a reflection of parts of myself. I call my creations "materializations of psychic states," human landscapes, and threads of my soul, offering a quiet invitation for others to merge with them. The value of my work is not aesthetic; it resides in the particular vibrations it creates within those who engage with it. A resonance that links us, binding us to the artwork and to each other.
When the spectator joins this resonance, the boundaries between artist and viewer dissolve. The process itself becomes alive—a collaborative act. My creations act as working entities, forging unique pathways between us as human beings. As the spectator engages, the artwork expands, guiding us toward a new vision of existence—within this world, within ourselves, and in relation to others.
If one allows oneself to be carried by this process, a symphony of psychic resonances unfolds. A dialogue begins. A metamorphosis of the soul takes place—a fleeting reflection, uncatchable yet profound. It is a poetic experience, an intense presence, a rigorous transformation, as if we are experiencing the firing of synapses themselves, leading to a new form of awareness.
I wish for my work to refine the human mind, to sharpen the human psyche so that emotions find echoes and words resonate deeply. My artwork invites you to become an echo chamber, amplifying the vibrations of this encounter. In this space, the inner self can expand, evolve, and find its place within the boundless weave of humanity.
