Biography
Erró (born 1932 in Ólafsvík, Iceland), whose real name is Guðmundur Guðmundsson, is one of Iceland's most internationally influential contemporary artists. For many decades he has lived and worked between Paris and Spain and has become a key figure in European Pop Art and politically charged visual culture.
As early as the 1960s, Erró caused a sensation as the first Icelandic artist to organize happenings and participate in intermedia art projects. At the same time, he experimented with film and early forms of media art. However, he became known worldwide primarily for his intensely colored paintings and complex collages, in which he interweaves popular imagery, political iconography, and mass visual culture. His works are characterized by an exuberant abundance of imagery, satirical subversion, and a critical engagement with consumerism, power, and globalization.
Erró's works are represented in major international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. However, the world's largest collection of his artistic output is housed in the Reykjavik Art Museum (Listasafn Reykjavíkur), which has honored Erró's work with several comprehensive presentations.

With his distinctive style, his cultural impact and his decades-long presence in the international art scene, Erró is today considered one of the most influential voices in contemporary European art.
